Big Beach Clean-Up Day Is Saturday:

Heal the Bay and the City of Santa Monica are calling for 3,000 volunteers to scour the Santa Monica beach on Saturday.

One of hundreds of events on an international environmental clean-up day with activities taking place in 90 countries and all 50 states, the 21st annual California Coastal Clean-Up Day in Santa Monica will focus on six beach sites and a dive/kayak site.

The Pacific American Volunteer Association, which is headquartered in Koreatown, plans to bring over 2,000 volunteers to the beach cleanup at Tower 22.

In addition to cleaning up the beach, the group will hold a kite flying contest for its young members, as well as a drawing and essay contest.

Time Inc.’s “Coastal Living Magazine” has teamed up with Heal the Bay and the City of Santa Monica this year and will give free gift bags to the first 1,000 volunteers on site.

Volunteers are needed Saturday, September 17, from 9 a.m. to noon at the following sites: underwater dive site, north of Santa Monica Pier (contact Anita Ybarra, (310) 458-8644), Tower 4 parking lot 10, 445 PCH, Tower 8, parking lot 8, 810 PCH, Tower 1550/North of the Pier, parking lot 1550, 1550 PCH, Tower 18, south of the Pier, parking lot 4, 2030 Barnard Way, Tower 22, parking lot 4, 2030 Barnard Way, Tower 27, parking lot 5, 2600 Barnard Way.Parking fees will be waived for people with a Coastal Cleanup Day flier (download from www.healthebay.org).
