Brentwood and Pasadena Poly are longtime football rivals, even though they’re not in the same league. Both schools often have strong teams and their meetings provide, in the words of Brentwood Coach Patrick Brown, “really good games.” They met last Saturday afternoon in Pasadena and the outcome was decided by two big plays. In Brentwood’s 24-14 victory, Kevin Yamazaki had an 85-yard kickoff return for a touchdown and Mason Moss threw an 84-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Tony Armato. Brentwood (5-1) will begin Delphic League play at home Saturday afternoon at 2:30p.m., hosting Maranatha, which has the same record. Two undefeated league teams met last weekend. Whittier Christian edged Campbell Hall, 20-19. “Our league is the strongest in the division.” said Brown. “Three teams will make the playoffs and we have four who are outstanding, so someone is going to be left out.” Brentwood’s only loss has come in a non-league game at Mojave High. A 19-play drive produced the first score against Pasadena Poly, which came back with a touchdown for a 7-7 tie. Then Yamazaki scored on his kickoff return and Evan Paley kicked a 25-yard field goal for a 17-7 halftime lead. Moss, a sophomore, then connected with Armato for another touchdown. Brentwood’s defense, which has been consistently good throughout the season, was led by linebacker Ian Shaw with 11 tackles. Another linebacker, Malcom Henderson, had eight and Brett Hanson-Ashkar had six.Yamazaki carried the ball 26 times and gained 143 yards.
