When St. Monica lost to La Salle Friday night, 41-0, it was the fourth time in six games the Mariners have been shut out.
Despite a dreadful start to the football season largely due to injuries, the possibility remains that the team could qualify for the playoffs. It’s a long shot, but mathematically possible, if St. Monica can begin winning its Camino Real League games.
This Friday, St. Monica will play Mary Star at Daniels Field in San Pedro.
“Our spirit remains high. The kids have great attitudes, but we haven’t been able to get things moving on offense,” said Coach Jason Strouse.
St. Monica fell behind, 41-0 at halftime, hurt by mistakes and ineffective special teams play. For the first time this season, most of the squad’s injured players were in the lineup, but several didn’t have much contact in practice during the week.
Tailback Vince Valdez played for the second straight game after coming back from a kidney ailment, but was held to 30 yards. Taylor Watson, scheduled to be the quarterback this season, played his first game after recovering from a broken arm. He shared quarterback duties with Tommy Marrone and also played wide receiver and defensive back.St. Monica (1-5) won its opening game from Bishop Montgomery, 22-20. The team hasn’t scored since except for one touchdown in a loss to Santa Monica.
