Santa Monica Conservancy Calls For Preservation Award Nominations:

Nominations close in less than a month for the Santa Monica Conservancy awards to individuals and projects that represent exemplary contributions to the preservation of Santa Monica’s architectural and cultural heritage.

“These awards showcase the accomplishments of those who have invested time and resources in the revitalization of Santa Monica’s historic places,” said Conservancy president Carol Lemlein. “While the three examples below are residential, commercial buildings and other preservation-related projects have been featured in past awards.”

A full list of awards presented since the program began in 2004 can be found on the Conservancy’s www.smconservancy.org/news-advocacy/preservation-awards.

The public is encouraged to nominate a person, structure or group for a 2015 Preservation Award no later than Dec. 15, 2014 by sending an e-mail to info@smconservancy.org or a letter to P.O. Box 653, Santa Monica, CA 90406.

The following information should be provided for each nomination:

A brief description of the individual, organization or project, and why it warrants an award. A specific award category (see guidelines below) can be included in the proposal but is not mandatory.

Any contact information available for the individual, organization or project being nominated.

The submitting party’s contact information: name, address, phone number and email.

A photo of the nominated property or properties if possible.

This year’s awards jury will be meeting after the Dec. 15 deadline and making award recommendations to the Conservancy Board of Directors. The awards presentation will be held at the Conservancy’s 2015 Annual Meeting on Feb. 8 at Hotel Casa del Mar in Santa Monica.

Preservation Awards Guidelines:

A category does not need to be selected for a nomination, but the definitions below may be helpful:

Restoration: historically authentic work that focuses on bringing a building back to its original condition.

Rehabilitation: work, in conformance with the Secretary of Interior Standards for Treatment of Historic Properties, that brings a historical building back into service.

Renovation: remodeling and renewing, or mixing modern design in with appropriate work on a historic building.

Adaptive Reuse: adaptation of a historic structure to a new use, ideally with minimal impact on the structure’s character-defining features.

Stewardship: long-term care and maintenance of a historic building or place.

In addition, the Conservancy recognizes outstanding individuals, groups and organizations with President’s, Volunteer, and Service Awards, and occasionally the David G Cameron Preservation Award to individuals or organizations in recognition of their outstanding accomplishments in preserving Santa Monica’s unique heritage, and for promoting the value of historic preservation in the city.

The Santa Monica Conservancy works to promote widespread understanding and appreciation of the many benefits of historic preservation through educational programs, assistance and advocacy.

Details on membership and upcoming events may be found on the Conservancy website at www.smconservancy.org.
