Latest police, crime and courts news.

A 20-year-old man shot and killed in an attack that also left two others wounded was identified today by the coroner’s office.

The attack occurred shortly after 9 a.m. Wednesday Dec. 17, near the 3100 block of Helms Avenue, Los Angeles Police Department Officer Drake Madison said.

Julio Betanco of Los Angeles died at a hospital died at the hospital from his gunshot wounds, according to the coroner’s office.

The three victims apparently were chased by more than one assailant and shot, Madison said.

An investigator who went to the scene said the other two unidentified victims did not cooperate with police, and it was unclear how many suspects were involved in the shooting, nor were any descriptions available.

The investigator said the victims’ uncooperative behavior was consistent with a crime possibly gang- or drug-related.

Nearby Hamilton High School was locked down for nearly two hours as a precaution following the shooting, according to the Los Angeles Unified School District.

Police searching the area handcuffed three people — two women and a man — and detained them for questioning, but they later were released, according to LAPD Officer Nuria Vanegas.

Anyone with more information on the case was asked to call police at (310) 444-1541. All tips can be made anonymously.
