Authorities have identified a La Canada Flintridge man killed Friday on his birthday when the car he was driving went about 500 feet down an embankment on a canyon road in Malibu.

His name was Oscar Alvarez, who died on his 35th birthday, according to the Los Angeles County coroner’s office.

He was driving a gray 2015 BMW 435i just before 7 p.m. Thursday on Malibu Canyon Road, about a mile north of Palm Canyon Lane, when the car left the roadway and rolled down the steep rock and dirt embankment, the California Highway Patrol reported.

A Los Angeles County Fire Department helicopter crew located the vehicle and soon after it was determined that the victim — the car’s sole occupant — was inside and suffered fatal injuries, according the CHP reported.

It’s unclear which direction and how fast the BMW going when the crash occurred, according to the CHP.

Authorities learned of the crash through the vehicle’s on-board Sirius satellite radio concierge service, officials said.
