The U.S. Coast Guard will set up temporary safety zones for fireworks displays in Southern California waters for the New Year's fireworks displays.

The U.S. Coast Guard will set up temporary safety zones for fireworks displays in Southern California waters for the New Year’s fireworks displays.

The temporary zoning measures, which go into effect Thursday evening, may limit or prohibit navigation by commercial and recreational waterway users, according to the Coast Guard.

The safety areas will include a 350-foot radius around the Carnival Cruise Pier Fireworks site from 11:30 p.m. Thursday until 12:30 a.m. New Year’s Day; a 500-foot radius around the southern jetty in Marina del Rey Harbor from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Thursday, and a 350-foot radius of the Shoreline Aquatic Park fireworks launch site from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Thursday, according to the Coast Guard.

Entering or operating in any of these safety zones is prohibited unless authorization is given by the Captain of the Port of Los Angeles-Long Beach, the Coast Guard said.

“The established safety zones are necessary to protect personnel, vessels and facilities from accidents during the fireworks displays,” said U.S. Coast Guard Capt. Jennifer Williams, commanding officer of the Los Angeles- Long Beach sector.

“We want everyone to enjoy the fireworks but also stay safe and aware,” Williams added.
