Teaching History As If Black Lives Matter

What do we know about our history? Too many textbooks used in US public schools are from an almost totally Eurocentric perspective. The September 11th Committee For Racial Justice workshop at Virginia Ave. Park will feature a panel of educators discussing the topic “Teaching History as if Black Lives Matter”.

The presenters will be: Jason David, The City School and AWARE-LA/White People 4 Black Lives;Neva Wallach, USC School of Social Work (former high school history teacher);Jennifer Macon, Grover Cleveland High School Humanitas Magnet Coordinator;Rebecca Williams, Grover Cleveland High School Humanitas Magnet 11th grade Coordinator; andTony Saavedra, Grover Cleveland High School Humanitas Magnet Teacher.

There will be time for discussion of alternative approaches to teaching history and Q & A with the presenters. Join us for an interesting and informative evening.

This is part of an ongoing monthly workshop series sponsored by the Committee For Racial Justice.

Co-sponsored by Virginia Ave. Park; the African American Parent, Staff, Student Support Group; and the Church in Ocean Park.
