The Santa Monica College women’s basketball team ran off to a big lead and had a 74-59 home victory over Glendale College Saturday night. But it was far from a happy occasion because center Jasmine English tumbled to the court floor shortly before halftime and suffered an injury to her left leg. English walked with the help of crutches at intermission, remained on crutches after the game and is a doubtful participant in upcoming games. The 6-foot-2 freshman from Palisades High had been the team’s starting center from the outset and a key member of the squad. With SMC holding a 45-25 halftime lead, Coach Lydia Strong was able to divide the second half minutes among several players. Freshman Fabinne Lorenz played more than usual.SMC broke the game open early. The Corsairs led, 19-14, then scored the next nine points.Guard Quiana Fentry began the stretch with a steal and layup. Elizabeth Jefferson made a three-point shot, Ashleigh Osborne a short jumper and English a follow-up.The lead grew to 37-18 when English was injured.Osborne is now the team’s primary inside player , with help from Kamesha Moore and Sharde Mcdaugherty.More Sports page 19
