CENTER Stage: Hope Foye: Opera, Jazz, Activism, Peekskill, Mexico & Beyond:

at The Paul Robeson Community Center, 2/15, 7 p.m. – 9 p.m. “A young African-American teenager from Hartford, Connecticut, is given a scholarship to study opera by the Jewish Women’s group, Hadassah. She has a chance meeting with Paul Robeson on a train, and it changes her life. The Met dashes her hopes for a career in the Opera, because she is Black. She then sings jazz at Café Society in New York, and spirituals and folk at Peekskill with Pete Seeger and Paul Robeson when the racist white mob goes on a rampage. She wins prizes at the World Youth Festival in Berlin and is therefore blacklisted in the U.S. . . . Robeson, W.E.B. DuBois, Shirley Graham & Albert Maltz raise money for her to study in Europe and Mexico, where she has a fabulous concert career, starring on her own television series in Mexico throughout the McCarthy era, and finally returns to the U.S. to continue singing & teaching.” More info: (323) 752-PAUL (752-7285) or (310) 458-7213. 6569 S.
