It has not been a successful year for most of Crossroads’ athletic teams, but the baseball season could be different. The Roadrunners, coached by Matt Amido, have won four of the first six games.Last Tuesday Crossroads defeated Oakwood, 9-8 at Clover Park. With a 4-1 record in non-league competition, Crossroads played another home game Thursday and held a 3-0 lead over Grace Brethren after five innings. However, the visiting Lancers scored five runs in the sixth and held on for a 5-4 victory.Crossroads used two pitchers Tuesday and three others Thursday. The Roadrunners’ problem was compounded when their ace, junior Kyle Fishburn, suffered a strained hip flexor in Tuesday’s game. He was all-league last season.First baseman Dillon Moir started Thursday and pitched five shutout innings before he and two relievers combined to allow five runs in the sixth.Crossroads broke a scoreless tie in the fourth when senior Kyle Moss drove in Devon Antin with a single and went on to third base on an error. Moss then scored on a wild pitch. The Roadrunners’ lead improved to 3-0 in the fifth when sophomore catcher Willie Litvack doubled home a run. However, in the sixth, Moir, Chris Allendice and freshman Jason Schneider were unable to hold the lead.A balk set up Crossroads’ final run in the sixth and Antin scored on a wild pitch.Since Fishburn and Ben Perkins pitched Tuesday they were not called upon Thursday.
