How to Build Strengths and Eliminate the Weaknesses of Being Bisexual

Of all the demographics comprising the LGBTQ community, ‘B’ individuals are most prevalent. But they’re also the least understood. Bisexual people are more likely to keep their true feelings to themselves for fear of incurring mistrust or even prejudice. A common misconception is that bisexuality equates with promiscuity. That just isn’t true. Let’s examine how any bisexual person can develop the strengths of their sexuality and eradicate the weaknesses.

Self-identification comes first

Here’s the key component of building on your strengths. Self-identify with pride. So many people fall into the trap of assuming bisexuals either prefer to be with men or to be with women. But the essence of bisexuality is flexibility. If you’re still unsure about your preferences, there’s no reason to be alarmed. This is natural, and you’re under no obligation to stick to one particular course. You may well feel your inclinations altering the more your experiment with different relationships. If you’re initially drawn to females, a suggested course of action would be signing up for an online dating site. Here you’ll have opportunities to meet bisexual women in a relaxing environment. The beauty of digital socializing is the way you’ll encounter such a cross-section of individuals sharing your motivations, unlike the offline venues you might be more familiar with, where you have no way of knowing much about any prospective partner’s background at the outset.

Dealing with the dating dilemma

The trouble with dating in the real world is, as touched on, you sometimes need to get closer to other singles before discovering whether they’re turned on by bisexual urges. You can’t stroll into a bar, start chatting to someone you’re attracted to, then assume they’ll far head over heels for your charm. But the digital setting provides the space to reach out and develop a rapport with other members. This scenario is especially useful if you happen to be shy or awkward when getting familiar with singles. The secure communication platform offered by these services is always conducive to candid discussions between bisexual individuals.

Out or not when building a relationship?

This is another crucial factor when it comes to overcoming the weaknesses posed by bisexuality. It might be the case that you are concerned about ‘coming out’ as bisexual to your family or friends, your workmates, or your partner. It would be natural to be worried about coming across instances of ‘biphobia.’ Straight people might look upon your indecision as a ‘phase.’ If you have gay friends, they might wonder if the emotions you seem to be struggling with are merely a symptom you are somehow ashamed to admit you’re gay. It would be better to approach any blossoming partnership from a starting point of complete honesty. Don’t even think about ‘not being out’ where your sexuality is concerned. Your bisexuality should be your ‘default’ mode. Everything else should evolve from that point – how and where you socialize and what you admit to potential partners as you are forging a connection. To go back to dating sites previously mentioned, you’ll discover vibrant communities within forums, chat rooms, or blog posts; individuals only too willing to offer guidance.

Be ready to face challenges

As we alluded to in our introduction, there are many preconceptions about bisexual people. For this reason, you should always be prepared to be open about your innermost feelings and be prepared to challenge anyone who is being ignorant.

A good starting point would be to keep abreast of issues facing other minorities in society, as the problems facing one particular group can crossover into others. Chat to your friends about the importance of maintaining health and wellbeing in other communities. You might take a leaf from the book of those championing black rights. Developing the confidence to engage in meaningful discussions on that topic will assist you when dealing with ignorant myths and stereotypes based on your sexual orientation. It would be worth reinforcing this fundamental point.

Communication is crucial when it comes to eliminating weaknesses associated with being bisexual. Too many people have been loath to admit their true emotional state because they’re overly concerned about how others are going to react. Perhaps a piece of worthwhile advice would be to do yourself a favor and put your own best interests first. If you pore over our recommendations, and even better, take them on board, you’ll soon feel far more empowered. Many aspects of putting these tips into practice are down to common sense. But there would be no harm in jotting down some notes to ensure you take the opportunities that come your way to build on your strengths. Remember being bisexual is an important part of who you are. Embrace this core attribute, and build on your strengths.
