An Investigation Has Been Launched Into the Fire’s Origin
The Santa Monica Fire Department quickly contained a fire that broke out early Sunday, igniting multiple palm trees and spreading to a nearby structure on Bay Street.
Fire crews responded to the scene at approximately 1:37 a.m. No injuries were reported, although an infant was evaluated for smoke inhalation and released without the need for hospital transport.
Firefighters extinguished the flames within 25 minutes of the initial 911 call. Occupants of the affected structure, a 3-unit building at 227 Bay st., had already evacuated by the time crews arrived. Despite high winds that increased the risk of the fire spreading further, responders managed to prevent additional damage.
Crews remained at the scene for over an hour to ensure the area was safe for residents to return. By 3 a.m., residents were allowed back into their homes.
The Santa Monica Police Department has launched an investigation into the fire’s origin. Anyone with information is urged to contact the police at 310-458-8491.
