Residents in need of permits can apply in person at the Parking Operations Office
The city of Santa Monica will reinstate enforcement of its Preferential Parking program beginning Monday, Feb. 17, following a temporary suspension prompted by the Palisades Fire and other regional wildfires.
The city initially halted enforcement in January to accommodate residents displaced by the fires. With recovery efforts progressing, officials aim to restore normal parking regulations to ensure residents retain access to on-street parking within Preferential Parking zones.
“The Preferential Parking program is designed to prioritize resident parking, and enforcement is a critical measure to ensure compliance with parking regulations,” city officials said in a statement.
To continue assisting those displaced by the fires, Santa Monica will extend the availability of a complimentary 30-day temporary parking permit established through the city’s emergency proclamation. Eligible Santa Monica residents housing wildfire evacuees can obtain up to two permits per residential address at no cost. These permits can be renewed for an additional 30 days if the emergency proclamation remains in effect.
Residents in need of permits can apply in person at the Parking Operations Office, located at 1444 4th St. The office is open from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. and 1 to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday and every other Friday.
All vehicles parked in a Preferential Parking zone must display a valid permit during enforcement hours as indicated on city parking signs. Vehicles without the appropriate permit after Feb. 17 may be subject to citation. Preferential parking enforcement will be in effect on Presidents Day, though street sweeping regulations will not be enforced.
