Local Student Scores In D.C.:

Last month, a local student won a major prize at a national science competition held at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History.

Santa Monican Catherine Haber, an 8th grader at St. Martin of Tours School, participated in the Discovery Channel Young Scientist’s Challenge. Her winning entry was entitled, “Blond Today, Brunette Tomorrow: Influence of Hair Color on the Perceived Intelligence of Women.”

About her trip to Washington Haber says, “There we competed in team challenges themed ‘Going Green.’ These challenges included determining the carbon footprints of cars, compacting trash, determining the effect of CO2 in a warmer climate, green architecture, solar-powered electric cars, and green chemistry.”

In addition to her “Special Prize,” Haber was given a $500 scholarship and will have a minor planet named after her.
