1. Samohi freshmen (l-r) Carolina Vazquez and Brianna Little, members of the school’s Human Rights Watch Student Task Force guided fellow students through Camp Darfur, a simulated refugee camp consisting of six tents, each with a different theme, set up on campus on Tuesday, April 15. Vazquez and Little focused on the plight of child soldiers. With photographs, testimonials that they read, and other visual guides, they described children as young as five being forced into war. Some students made red handprints, a symbol of the “Genocide Intervention Network.” 2. Student speakers told their peers about Darfur’s atrocities, life in refugee camps, food and water shortages, and the plight of child soldiers. Participants also learned what they could do to bring attention to this humanitarian crisis.
