9/11 Remembered:

Santa Monica firefighters assembled outside the City’s four fire stations on September 11 to commemorate the public safety workers and thousands of civilians who lost their lives in the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. The 6:45 a.m. memorial, coordinated by fire truck radios, has become an annual event.

At Fire Station No. 1 on 7th Street, the firefighters, joined by a contingent from the Santa Monica Police Department, observed the flag being lowered to half staff and listened as Fire Chief Jim Hone made brief remarks in memory of the 343 firefighters, more than 60 police officers, and over 2,700 people who died that day in New York City. “That’s more than perished at Pearl Harbor,” Chief Hone observed after the ceremony.

“We will not forget the events of that terrible morning nor will we forget how Americans responded at the Pentagon, in the skies over Pennsylvania, and in New York City – with heroism and selflessness, with compassion and courage,” said Fire Safety Coordinator Suzanne Post.
