Actress Gloria Stuart and artist Don Bachardy will appear in a special program in the Martin Luther King, Jr. Auditorium at the Santa Monica Public Library on Saturday, February 25 from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Stuart and Bachardy have both played leading roles in the Los Angeles literary/art scene for decades. Moderated by Sara S. Hodson, Curator of Literary Manuscripts at The Huntington, the pair will talk about their lives, work and collaborations. Both Stuart and Bachardy have long and strong ties to Santa Monica. Born here, Stuart served as a model for the “Moving Picture Industry” panel in the library mural cycle that Stanton Macdonald-Wright painted in the mid-1930s. Out of sight for forty years, the mural has been restored and installed in the new Main Library, as part of a loan from the Smithsonian American Art Museum. The Adelaide Drive house that Bachardy and his late partner Christopher Isherwood lived in for decades has long been a kind of salon for wide range of artists, literati and celebrities. Bachardy is the first subject of the library’s new “oral history” that is now in the works.
