FootballFormer Santa Monica College defensive back Donnie Henderson has been named defensive co-ordinator of the Detroit Lions. He had the same job with the New York Jets for the last two years and was previously with the Baltimore Ravens for five years. Henderson played for SMC in 1978 and ’79 before going on to Utah State. Venice High running back Kenny Ashley has signed a letter of intent with USC and teammate Jonas Mouton, a defensive back, has chosen Michigan. USC was recruiting Mouton, who informed the Trojans of his decision prior to last week’s initial signing day. Ashley, who starred in a victory over Santa Monica High last season, had verbally committed to Mississippi State, but changed his mind when USC came through with a scholarship offer. He will be one of five high profile running backs signed by USC who will try to make an impact next season as a freshman. The highest-rated one is Stafon Johnson of Dorsey High.Santa Monica College defensive end Dexter Manley II, son of the former NFL player of the same name, signed with Oregon.BaseballCody Decker, Santa Monica High’s baseball star the last three years, is in the plans of UCLA Coach John Savage as a freshman. Decker is listed as the team’s Designated Hitter. The Bruins were 15-41 last season, including 4-20 in conference games. They began the 2006 season last weekend.
