“The Maze Runner” Debuts At Top Of Box Office:

The youth-based sci-fi thriller “The Maze Runner” debuted in the top spot at this weekend’s box office, earning more than twice as much as second-place finisher “A Walk Among The Tombstones,” according to Rentrak industry analysts.

“Maze Runner” took in an estimated $32.5 million compared with $13.1 million for “Tombstones,” the latest film starring Liam-Neeson-as-action-hero. Coming in third with $11.8 million was “This Is Where I Leave You,” with an all-star cast topped by Jason Bateman, Jane Fonda and Tina Fey.

The box office success of “Maze Runner” proves once again that the young adult audience “when properly marketed to and offered the right movie at the right time loves to line up at the multiplexes,” according to Rentrak’s analysis.

Rounding out the Top 5 was last weekend’s No. 1 film “No Good Deed,” which dropped to fourth place and “Dolphin Tale 2” in fifth place with $9.0 million.

The remaining films in this weekend’s Top 10 were: “Guardians of the Galaxy” with $5.1 million; “Let’s Be Cops,” $2.67 million; “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,” $2.65 million; “The Drop,” $2.0 million; and “If I Stay,” $1.8 million.

The final box office tally will be released later this week.
