For the third time this year, a Santa Monica College Professor has been named a Fulbright Scholar. Santa Monica College adjunct political science professor Natalina Monteiro’s Fulbright Scholar’s Award will take her to Mozambique. She will leave for the southwestern African nation next month and spend a year there, teaching a course on political science research methods to students at Eduardo Mondlane University in the capital city of Maputo. She will also conduct research on the effects of globalization and gender in the market economy and on child labor laws in Mozambique. In the spring, English professor Karin Costello won a Fulbright to lecture at Intercollege in Nicosia, Cyprus, and adjunct English professor Carol Davis, the college’s third Fulbright scholar, will teach and lecture in Russia this fall. Monteiro, who has made a name for herself as both a teacher and researcher, has taught at SMC since 2004. She has also taught and lectured at several colleges and universities in California and Arizona, including Cal State Northridge, Cal State San Marcos and Northern Arizona University. In addition, she has received numerous fellowships, grants and awards, including research grants and fellowships from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The author of two published articles, she has presented papers at conferences throughout the world, and conducted research in the United States, Africa and Central America.Fluent in several languages, including Spanish and Portuguese, she received her Ph.D. in political science from Northern Arizona University, a master’s in applied socio-cultural anthropology from Northern Arizona University, and a bachelor’s degree in anthropology and Spanish from the University of Rhode Island. She also studied organic chemistry at the Universidade Nova de Lisboa in Portugal.
