The Race Begins: Filing Period Opens Today For June 3 Primary Elections:

Candidates seeking to fill Congressman Henry Waxman’s 33rd District seat can officially file their papers today. The filing period will close March 7.

Waxman announced Jan. 31 he would not seek reelection after a 40-year career in the House of Representatives.

Today marks the day all candidates can file for the June 3 primary elections for a range of government positions across the State.

According to reports, the upcoming June ballot will include primaries for governor, seven other statewide offices, four seats on the Board of Equalization, all of California’s 53 congressional seats, 20 of the 40 state Senate seats, and all 80 seats in the Assembly.

The filing period will be extended to March 12 for offices where no incumbent files, except for those where the incumbent cannot seek re-election because of term limits.

The race for the 33rd District is likely to include, but not limited to, current State Senator Ted Lieu, former Los Angeles City Controller Wendy Greuel, attorney Barbara Mulvaney, self-help author Marianne Williamson, and television director and executive Brent Roske.

The 33rd congressional district includes Santa Monica, Pacific Palisades, Malibu, Beverly Hills, Agoura Hills, Venice, Mar Vista, and the South Bay.

Another local race to watch is the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors Third District seat, which is currently held by soon to be termed out LA County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky

Potential candidates for this race include former state Sen. Sheila Kuehl, former Santa Monica Mayor Bobby Shriver, West Hollywood Councilman John Duran, and former Malibu Mayor Pamela Conley Ulich.

The third supervisorial district encompasses Santa Monica as well as Beverly Hills, Calabasas, Hidden Hills, San Fernando, West Hollywood, Westlake Village, and a handful of unincorporated areas such as Agoura and Universal City.
