Dear City Council, We are writing to express our extreme disappointment with the City Council’s provisional vote last week to adopt an ordinance that would allow commercial fitness instruction, classes and camps in Palisades Park. We regard commercialization of Palisades Park as a betrayal of the public trust.

Dear City Council, The issue of regulating fitness training in Santa Monica city parks has been debated for more than a year, and last week the city council deliberated on an ordinance that would formalize that regulatory and permitting process.

Staying in shape is not always free or cheap. Those providing fitness services within Santa Monica may have to dole out some extra cash if they want to continue providing outdoor fitness classes overlooking the Pacific Ocean.

Friends of Palisades Park is delighted with the Landscape Division’s new restoration efforts. But will the restoration be extended to the all degraded parts of the park? And will it last if the city permits 20 new boot camps?

1450 Ocean, the Camera Obscura building in Palisades Park, is offering plenty of arts, crafts, and culture workshops during the rest of September and October.
