Malibu Film Festival Kicks Off at Viceroy:

Modeled after Cannes and Sundance, the Malibu Film Festival showcases new independent films and filmmakers from around the world.

The festival will begin its sixth year Thursday, April 14, with an opening night party and fashion show at the Viceroy in Santa Monica.

Scheduled from 8 p.m. to midnight, the party will feature a fashion show, music spun by a KCRW d.j., hors d’oeuvres, beer, wine and spirits.

The Viceroy is located on Ocean Avenue at Pico Boulevard. Tickets are $25. Sponsors are the Viceroy, Paul Mitchell and Patron Tequila.

New independent films will be screened Friday, Saturday and Sunday, April 15 to 17, at American Cinematheque’s Aero Theater in Santa Monica, 1328 Montana Avenue at 14th Street in Santa Monica. In all, 30 films will be shown.

VIP Screening Pass is $99. General admission is $8, and $5 for students with valid school ID.

Pitch Day, at which film makers can meet industry executives, will be held Saturday, April 16, from noon to 2 p.m. at the Aero. Tickets are $50.

The festival’s closing night awards party will be held at Wolfgang Puck’s Granita in Malibu on Monday, April 18, from 7 to 10 p.m. In addition to awards to films and filmmakers, actor Pierce Brosnan, a longtime Malibu resident will be honored.
