A CITY MOURNS THE DEAD:

To mark the death of the 2000th American soldier in the Iraq war last Tuesday, October 25, the Veterans for Peace held a candlelight vigil at Arlington West Memorial on Santa Monica beach on Sunday evening In addition to the 2,000 crosses in the sand, 20 flag-draped caskets represented the 20 soldiers who were killed last week. At presstime last night, the total number of war dead had risen to 2025.

Countless other vigils were held all over L.A. and in cities and towns across the country. Tuesday, October 25, Susan Adelman and Samantha Miller of CODEPINK were at the Veterans Memorial in Westwood. (left photo) And Wednesday, people gathered at the sculpture of Saint Monica in Palisades Park for still another vigil (right photo).
