Ashleigh Osborne, a freshman forward from Lynwood High, has blossomed late in her freshman season on the Santa Monica College women’s basketball team. The departure of center Jasmine English with a knee injury, has given more responsibility to Osborne, who is 5-foot-11 and plays well both inside and with an accurate outside shot.Osborne scored 20 points last Wednesday night, but it wasn’t enough to prevent a 71-66 loss to L.A. Valley College at Corsair Pavilion. With SMC trailing in the second half Osborne made consecutive three-point shots. Then, with the game within seconds of ending she shot another to make the final margin closer.SMC got off to a 16-8 lead, effectively using a zone defense. However, Valley rallied to a 39-32 halftime lead. With SMC trailing, 69-61, forward Sharde Mcdaugherty scored on a follow shot. But the Corsairs had a deficit they couldn’t overcome.
