New Roads Batters Wearing Out Foes:

Looking at batting averages of Westside baseball teams, the New Roads lineup stands out.

The Jaguars have Rafael Irvin batting .448, Ichizo Yamada and Nick Cohen at .370 and Alex Vibiano at .367. Then there are six more hitters at .300 or above.

Despite the hitting, New Roads is on a three-game losing streak with a doubleheader loss to Windward (3-2 and 10-3) and a 4-3 loss to Sage Hill of Newport Beach, 4-3. The overall record is 4-6, all in non-league games.

St. Monica defeated LA Baptist, 2-1. The Mariners are 4-5 overall, including 2-3 in the Del Rey League.

Neither Crossroads nor Brentwood played last week. Malibu lost to Oak Park, 14-7 and is 5-5 overall, including 2-1 in the Frontier League.

In the LA City Section, Palisades leads the Western League with a 4-0 record following 11-0 and 9-3 wins over Hamilton. The Dolphins also had a 6-2 loss to San Fernando last week.

Venice lost twice to Westchester, 12-2 and 11-0, leaving the Gondoliers 2-9 overall and 2-2 in the Western League.

Girls

Santa Monica won its Ocean League opener, 14-0 over Hawthorne. The Vikings then hosted Grove City, Ohio in a doubleheader. Samohi lost the first game, 3-1 and won the second, 10-0. The Vikings have a 9-3 overall record.

St. Monica defeated Windward, 9-1, then lost to El Segundo 4-2 and Sacannah 4-2. The Mariners are 6-3 and have yet to play a league game.

Malibu lost to Village Christian 8-1,then defeated the same team, 5-3 before losing to La Reina of Thousand Oaks, 16-0. Malibu is 8-4, all in non-league games.

Crossroads, New Roads and Brentwood didn’t play in the past week.

In the LA City Section, Venice defeated Poly, 6-2, lost a 3-2 game to Taft, then won a pair of Western League games – 4-3 over University and 3-1 over Westchester. So, after struggling in early non-league play the team is 3-0 in the league.

Palisades forfeited a game to Westchester, defeated Hamilton, 11-5 and lost to Garfield, 9-4. The Dolphins are 6-5 overall, including 2-1 in the Western League.
