Venice Holds Off University Rally, 7-6:

Venice High was rolling toward a shutout victory at University High last Thursday when it suddenly had to scramble to escape.

Venice led, 7-0, going into the seventh inning. University scored six times and had runners on base when Venice was finally able to get the final out. The teams had played two days earlier at Venice. University won that game, 8-3.

Palisades took over the league lead by defeating Westchester twice, 14-3 and 9-1. Palisades has a 6-1 league record and Westchester is 6-2, followed by University at 5-3, Venice at 4-3 and Hamilton at 2-6. Fairfax is 0-8.

Matt Skolrich of Palisades leads the league in batting with a .524 average. Ricky Gutierrez of University leads in RBI with 16.

Santa Monica High played non-league games last week. The Vikings won a doubleheader at Valley Christian, 8-5 and 8-2 but lost to Loyola, 11-1.

St. Monica defeated Calvary Chapel, 4-3, lost to Cathedral, 10-6 and St. Bernard, 9-4 and edged Maranatha, 9-8. The Mariners are 7-9 overall, including 3-4 in the Del Rey League. Mariner Vince Valdez is batting .370 and Mariner Brandon Tobin .354.

Crossroads won two Delphic League games from Kilpatrick, 9-5 and 17-7. The Roadrunners are 6-5 overall and 2-2 in the league.

New Roads lost to Rolling Hills Prep, 6-5, defeated providence, 14-4 and defeated Community Harvest Charter, 11-8. New Roads is 8-9 overall, including 1-1 in the Harbor League.

Girls

Several softball teams, including Santa Monica and St. Monica Highs, were on spring break. But a few did play.

Crossroads lost to Campbell Hall, 19-0 and Brentwood played two games, defeating Windward, 2-0 and losing to Grace Brethren, 11-0.

In the LA City Section Venice defeated University, 4-3 and Fairfax, 5-3. Palisades lost to Fairfax, 2-0 and Westchester, 12-0.

Venice leads the league with a 6-0 record. Westchester is 5-1, followed by Fairfax at 4-3 and Palisades at 2-3. Hamilton and University are 0-5.

Emily Noel of Palisades is hitting .522. Michelle Ayre of Venice is hitting .413 and leads the league in RBI with 23. Sarina Dominguez of Venice is hitting .408.
