Santa Monica Firm Wins Prestigious Award:

The Los Angeles Conservancy has awarded its 2006 Preservation Award to Killefer Flammang Architects for its work on the former Pacific Electric Building located in downtown Los Angeles. The Santa Monica-based firm took the space – which long ago housed the Red Cars – and turned it into 314 lofts.

Says architect Barbara Flammang, “The biggest challenge was integrating the historic elements, such as mahogany doors and marble wainscots, with contemporary building materials. Our drawings had months of review by the National Park Service, the State Office of Historic Preservation and the City of Los Angeles.”

Earlier this year the building picked up the National Trust for Preservation’s Restoration Award.
