The bus ride, which consisted of a seemingly manageable 68 miles, required three hours.
But once Brentwood’s football team arrived for a pre-game meal and a first round CIF playoff game against Bloomington Christian Friday night, November 17, everything was fine.
Brentwood romped to a 42-6 victory as six different players scored touchdowns.
“We knew they wanted to control the ball and grind out yardage and in the first quarter they did,” said Brentwood Coach Patrick Brown. “But we went ahead at halftime, 20-6, and then Josh Amster had an 85-yard touchdown run.”
Amster, a sophomore who alternates with senior Mason Moss at quarterback, displayed his speed on a planned sweep; it was the first of three touchdowns by the Eagles in the third quarter.
Moss threw three touchdown passes. He teamed with Ben Oliva on the first one, then Charlie James and Evan Paley. Amster also threw a touchdown pass and Manny Benton had a scoring run.
Brown praised defensive tackle Taylor Ross, who moved to noseguard during the game and helped halt the home team’s running attack. He also singled out Michael Davidoff, who made a spectacular interception.
The strength of the Alpha League was evident on this evening as Whittier Christian and Maranatha also had one-sided victories.
Brentwood’s second round game on Friday night, November 24 at 7:30, will be against second-seeded Boron at Clark Field in Lakewood. It’s a Brentwood home game but must be played elsewhere because the CIF requires playoff games to be played at night and Brentwood’s campus field doesn’t have lights.
