The coaching staff and their senior wrestlers knew that the opposition would be tough going into their dual meet at West Covina High School on Thursday, December 7. West Covina is ranked near the top in Southern California high school wrestling. As head coach Mark Black noted, “West Covina’s varsity team is strong throughout the lineup and stacked with seniors.” Overall scores for the day were Junior Varsity 38-32 and Varsity 52-18. Despite the disappointing numbers for Samohi, four of the varsity losses were determined by only one point. Both coach Black and assistant coach Brent Wright encouraged their team to realize that as good as they think they are, there are always other levels to strive for. The team will now take its training up a notch. Wright says, “It’s a long season and we now know what is needed to finish with a bang – I believe this may have been the best thing for the team.”
