Although the word has come into widespread use only in recent years, the concept has been recognized, if not practiced, for quite a long time. Daniel Burnham, the architect who was Director of Works for the Chicago World’s Fair of 1893, expressed the idea when he said, “Up to our time, strict economy in the use of natural resources has not been practiced, but it must be henceforth unless we are immoral enough to impair conditions in which our children are to live.”
