Can’t go to Cannes? The Santa Monica Film Festival offers a chance to see the work of a variety of independent filmmakers. The centerpiece film this year is Jeffrey Chernov’s A Line in the Sand, September 20 at Loew’s Broadway. One never knows which unknown director may be tomorrow’s hottest upcoming talent. P.S. Heal the Bay Coastal Cleanup Day, September 20, 9am-noon, free, Santa Monica Beach, various locations, 310.451.1500 x153.Since its inception in 1985, Heal the Bay’s Coastal Cleanup Day has become a major environmental event. 10,000 volunteers are expected to help with beach cleanup. It can be a learning experience just to see what gets discarded and ends up in the ocean – past cleanups retrieved a chandelier, a bridal gown, and a briefcase of graham crackers. Volunteer and help keep the ocean clean.
