Gustavo Dudamel will conduct the Los Angeles Philharmonic in Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 and a new work featuring lyrics by poet Amanda Gorman on Thursday, Aug. 20, at the Hollywood Bowl.
The 8 p.m. performance, titled “Celebrating Gustavo at the Bowl: Beethoven 9,” marks Dudamel’s 17 years as the orchestra’s music and artistic director. Gates open at 6 p.m.
The program opens with the world premiere of Michael Giacchino’s “Hymns of the Heart,” an LA Phil commission with lyrics by Gorman, the youngest presidential inaugural poet in U.S. history. The piece incorporates students from under-resourced schools performing on instruments such as xylophones and glockenspiels, along with a children’s choir. Arrangements are by Jeff Kryka and Ljova.
After intermission, Dudamel will lead Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, known for its “Ode to Joy” finale.
