The first high school basketball event of the new season is taking place this week (December 1-6) at the St. Monica gym.
It’s the St. Monica Tournament, a fixture on the Westside in the distant past that was discontinued for many years, then brought back last season by athletic director Rick Bruce and coach Tony Depa.
The field includes St. Monica, Bellarmine-Jefferson, LACES, Whitney and four others. Defending champion Cathedral is not entered.
Depa is optimistic about his team. The Mariners have key players returning from a squad that won 16 games last season and made the playoffs.
