Freshman Stands Out In Brentwood Defeat:

Although Brentwood School lost a non-league football game to St. Bernard last Friday, 49-30, freshman receiver Garrett Swanky made a huge impression.

Swanky caught five passes for 92 yards, including three for touchdowns.

“He established himself as a starter at the beginning of practice,” said Coach Patrick Brown. “We were well aware of him because he had been in our junior high.”

Swanky, who is 6 foot, 155 pounds, made one touchdown reception as he dove for the ball in the end zone.

“He makes good adjustments to the ball and runs good routes,” said Brown.

Swanky caught one touchdown pass from starting quarterback Greg Caruso and two from Nick Aull, who played on the junior varsity last season.

Brentwood, which went 1-2 in non-league games, will begin Alpha League competition Friday at Marshall of Pasadena. In a non-league game Marshall had an impressive win over Pasadena Poly.

“We had difficulty with St. Bernard’s talent,” said Brown. “We don’t often see teams with that much speed. But we hope to improve by playing good teams in non-league games.”

After trailing in its home opener, 20-0, Brentwood scored the next nine points. However, St. Bernard added another touchdown shortly before halftime.
