Samohi Girls Win In Arizona:

The Santa Monica High girls basketball team won its opening game in the Nike Invitational Tournament in Arizona last Friday.

Coach Marty Verdugo’s squad cruised past Pinnacle High, 57-39. Verdugo is testing his highly-regarded team by scheduling tournaments and other away games before Ocean League play begins next month.

Samohi, which has yet to play a home game, has a 6-3 record and will face more formidable opposition as the Arizona tournament continues.

Guard Thea Lemberger, who has signed a letter of intent to UCLA, leads the team in scoring with 23.8 per game and in assists with 5.8. The second leading scorer is forward Daisy Feder, who has committed to UC San Diego.

Sophomore Sabrina Norton is the leading rebounder with 7.4 per game.
