Lindheim Named SMC Football Coach:

Gifford Lindheim, who became Santa Monica College’s interim head football coach following the removal and then subsequent death of Robert Taylor last season, will coach the team again in the upcoming season.

Athletic Director Gregg Simmons said he interviewed several strong, qualified candidates before making the decision.

“During my first meeting with Coach Lindheim he discussed his plans for academic success, recruiting local talent and eligibility leading to graduation,” said Simmons in a press release issued by the school.

Although the return of Lindheim provides continuity it leaves the program in the hands of someone who was associated with the mostly-losing 2009 season.

The program has been in a downward spiral the last four years, Simmons praised Lindheim for his professionalism.

“The 2009 football season was tough for all of us, but as the interim head coach he guided the team in a positive and professional manner,” said Simmons.
