AYSO Spring Tournament Soccer in High Gear:

Santa Monica AYSO All-Star soccer teams are travelling about the Southland as the spring calendar of regional tournaments is moving into high gear. If the squads’ recent performances at Thousands Oaks’ annual Pot O’ Gold Tournament are any indication, it could be a very successful campaign. No fewer than three Santa Monica AYSO teams won their division championships at Pot O’ Gold, besting elite youth teams from the southern half of the state. In the U14 girls division, Coach Dickie Pye’s team won the championship with four straight victories, outscoring the competition along the way 23-2. Likewise, the U10 boys Mustangs, coached by Christian Bordal, brought home championship trophies, as did the U10 girl All Stars coached by Gary Barry and Alex Benn. The U10 girls outscored their opponents 26-2. Plans for upcoming tournaments include the Santa Clarita Showdown (April 24-25), Camarillo’s Strawberry Cup (May 15-16) and the Top Gun Tournament in San Diego over Memorial Day weekend.

Taiko Takes on Tongva Park:

By Sam Skopp

This past Saturday, the Taiko Center of Los Angeles offered a workshop to Santa Monicans and passersby as part of Tongva Park’s “Family Saturday” series of events.

Reverend Tom Kurai, who’s the director of the Taiko Center of Los Angeles and has performed and taught Taiko drumming in the U.S. for over 40 years, led the workshop. A few additional team members assisted groups of participants, which were comprised of people from elementary school age to nearing retirement age. Regardless of demographic, all participants in the rotating groups of volunteers were enthusiastically following Kurai’s drumming exercises.
