Samohi Basketball Players Receive Variety Of Honors:

Every starter on the Santa Monica High boys basketball team has been named all-Ocean League.

That’s just one of numerous honors accorded the Vikings, who went undefeated in the league, reached the CIFchampionship game and then won a game in the state tournament.

Forward Solomon Singer was named Ocean League Player of theYear. Singer is currently considering colleges and recently visited UC Riverside.

The league’s second highest individual honor, Most Outstanding Player, went to Viking guard CoreyWalker.

Singer, Walker and forward James Montgomery were named to the all-CIF team in Samohi’s division.

But of all the honors Coach James Hecht is likely to be proudest of the fact all five starters were recognized for the contributions they made.

Singer, Walker, Montgomery, Danilo Toskovic and Harry Horn were all named to either the first or second teams.

Horn’s sacrifice was the greatest. When 6-foot-6 all-league center Kunno Shofu graduated a year ago and the Vikings were left without a big man, the 6-foot-2 Horn volunteered to play center.

“He gave away size in most games but he didn’t back off,” said Hecht. “He was our unsung hero.”

Hecht believes Samohi’s fans are deserving of an award too.

’The fans helped us tremendously,”he said.”We couldn’t have accomplished what we did without their support.”
