St. Monica Needs Four to Close Out Eagles: Mariners Advance in CIF

SANTA MONICA – It wasn’t pretty, but a win is a win in the CIF boys’ volleyball tournament.

St. Monica received a wakeup call in the third game against the Capistrano Valley Christian Eagles, losing their first game in dual play in almost a month. But they took out their frustration in the fourth game. The Mariners took the match 25-19, 25-19, 22-25, 25-13.

“We had a lot of trouble with their height for some reason,” St. Monica coach Javy Martinez said. “We had a week layoff, (so we were) kind of rusty. Just those two factors kind of played into it. It should have never went to four (games), but when you make little mistakes like that, it costs you in the playoffs.”

St. Monica will have more Eagles to fight as they travel to San Gabriel Academy on Thursday for round two of the CIF.
