Santa Monica Police Identify Man Who Jumped Off Bluffs In Suicide Attempt: News Update

Santa Monica police have identified the man who attempted suicide by jumping off the bluffs on the 800 block of Palisades Park at about 3:30 p.m. on Thursday afternoon.

Santa Monica Police Department Sgt. Richard Lewis said the man had been identified as 62-year-old Leo Hurtado.

Lewis said he had no new information on Hurtado’s injuries.

“A detective will get the case on Monday,” Lewis said.

The Pacific Coast Highway was closed for almost an hour during the rescue — Hurtado was located in the bluffs about 40 feet above the PCH.

According to a witness, Hurtado climbed over the railing and then jumped. He was transported to a local hospital once authorities were able to get to him.

Traffic quickly backed up on the 10 Freeway and the 405 Freeway while the PCH was closed.
