SMMUSD Board Accepting District Advisory Committee Applications:

The Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District Board of Education is currently accepting applications for openings on its district advisory committees (DACs). Applications can be found at http://www.smmusd.org/DAC/pdf/DACappEngSP.pdf.

Members of the public are encouraged to apply to serve on one of the following committees: Early Child Care and Development, Health and Safety, Special Education, and Visual and Performing Arts. Membership terms range from one to four years to allow for a balance of expiring terms each year.

In order for applications to be considered by the Board of Education at its June 27, 2012, meeting, completed applications must be received no later than June 19. Applications received after June 19 will be considered at a later board meeting.

District advisory committees provide a method whereby citizens and educators can understand better the attitudes and opinions that are held in the school-community environment.

Such a committee shall have as its purpose improved communication and understanding. It is not the intention that advisory committees become policy-making bodies or that they manage or direct the schools.

Committees are advisory in nature only; that is, they inquire, inform, suggest, recommend.

It is assumed, however, that through improved understanding and information, the district can and will move in the direction of clearly demonstrated needs and desires of the community to be served.

All DAC members are expected to:

1. Keep learning and achievement for all students as the primary focus

2. Value, support, and advocate for public education

3. Recognize and respect differences of perspective and style on the committee and among staff, students, parents, and the community

4. Conduct him/herself in a dignified and professional manner, treating everyone with civility and respect
