St. Monica (21-6) won their final game of the regular season against Cantwell-Sacred Heart (15-8) on senior night by a score of 64-59 at home Tuesday night.
St. Monica Head Basketball Coach John Skinner was proud of the way the Mariners handled themselves.
“It was a tough battle with each team making strong runs throughout the game,” said Skinner.
With the win St. Monica’s improve to 6-2 in the Camino Real League and solidify second place giving the Lady Mariners an excellent chance at going to the playoffs.
Cantwell-Sacred Heart scored 25 points in the second quarter to take a 7 point lead into halftime.
St. Monica went on a 19-5 run to start the fourth quarter but Cantwell came right back with a 17-5 run of their own to take a five point lead with three minutes left.
A timely three-point shot by Mariners guard Katrina Balatico helped the Lady Mariners to pull away with the victory.
“I was really proud of how Melissa finished the game and how the team stepped up defensively,” said Skinner. “Briana had another big scoring night but it was a couple of key assists down the stretch that helped make the difference. Cantwell is a solid team that will be a force to be reckon with in the CIF Playoffs.”
Mariners guard Briana Harris put up 30 points with 11 rebounds and five assists while forward Melissa Maragnes had 17 points, 11 rebounds, and four blocks.
