The Miles Memorial Playhouse in Santa Monica began performances Friday night of its limited engagement of “Delicious Reality” that runs through May 19.
Performances will be Friday and Saturday at 8 pm, with matinees on Saturday, May 11 and Sunday, May 19 at 2 pm.
The show presents tantalizing and provocative tales from LA’s restaurant scene.
In stark contrast to cooking shows on reality TV, this new ensemble theater performance uncovers the untold experiences in the kitchens and dining rooms of today’s restaurants. This multicultural ensemble mixes together a series of tasty images, stories, and mythology from the front and back of the house, with a healthy dose of worker and immigrant perspective.
To develop “Delicious Reality,” TeAda Productions partnered with two local organizations, Restaurant Opportunity Center Los Angeles (ROC-LA) and Southeast Asian Community Alliance (SEACA), to create a collaborative new performance piece.
ROC-LA is a local worker’s organization dedicated to winning improved working conditions and raising industry standards for all Los Angeles restaurant workers.
SEACA is a youth organizing group that empowers Southeast Asian youth and their communities through intergenerational, multiethnic dialogue, leadership development, and community organizing.
This new performance is a result of workshops and story circles that brought artists, youth, and restaurant workers together to share their experiences in a safe space and explore the issues, conditions, and challenges working in today’s restaurants.
This project is made possible in part by a grant from the City of Santa Monica and the Santa Monica Arts Commission; the California Arts Council, a state agency, as well as the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency.
TeAda Productions is a 501c3 organization supported through grants from the California Community Foundation, the Los Angeles County Arts Commission, the City of Los Angeles Cultural Affairs Department and the generous donations of individuals.
The Miles Memorial Playhouse is located at 1130 Lincoln Boulevard, Santa Monica.
Tickets are $20 (students/seniors $15).
Tickets to the Saturday, May 11 matinee are $40 as it is the Gala opening, which includes a post-show discussion and reception with the performers with proceeds going to SEACA and ROC-LA.
