Santa Monica College will host its second Hair Show and Pinning Ceremony on Oct. 26.
This event represents the completion of the Cosmetology and Skin Care programs at SMC.
It takes Cosmetology students 1600 hours and the Skin Care students 600 hours to complete their training and receive a certificate. The ceremony acknowledges their hard work and dedication inviting family and friends to share in the celebration of their accomplishments.
Every Friday, after school hours, students learned various advanced makeup and hairstyling techniques to prepare for the show. Students were required to collaborate in groups and develop a theme. The theme consisted of a collection of three to five models including music, wardrobe, hair styles, and makeup.
Cosmetology instructor Samantha Manuel said the students worked tirelessly within a limited amount of time, to produce optimal results.
“Their hard work was evident through the beautiful, impeccable completed looks to say the least,” Manuel said. “The work presented could easily be compared to any professional show. The show ignited passion for our ever changing industry.”
Manuel said students’ artistic skills and self confidence was elevated to a new level.
“It brought pride and unity to the Cosmetology Department,” she said. “Because of the great success and turnout we hope to make it a tradition in the Cosmetology Department. Students are already planning for the next show, indicating it motivated them to think outside of the box.”
