High Surf Claims Life Of Malibu Surfer:

A surfer was found unconscious today in Malibu, where six-to eight-foot waves were reported, and was pronounced dead at a hospital.

The man was found about 11:20 a.m. floating in the water, said Kyle Daniels of the Los Angeles County Fire Department’s Lifeguard Division.

“He was unconscious and non-breathing,” Daniels said, adding that CPR was administered by rescuers.

The unidentified man, who appeared to be in his 50s, was declared dead at a hospital, said Sgt. Philips Brooks of the Malibu-Lost Hills Sheriff’s Station.

Higher than normal surf generated by Hurricane Marie began along California’s coast today, raising fears of some flooding and powerful rip currents through Friday and creating “extremely dangerous” conditions for swimmers and surfers, forecasters said.

The surf was expected to peak on Wednesday, then slowly diminish but remain strong enough to meet high surf advisory criteria through Friday, the National Weather Service reported.

The NWS posted a high surf advisory at 10 this morning that is expected to remain in effect through 6 p.m. Friday in Los Angeles County.
