PBS Kids Holds Writers Contest

PBS SoCal KOCE urges Los Angeles area children to enter the PBS KIDS Writers Contest before the April 30, 2017 deadline. The annual contest is a national initiative designed to promote the advancement of children’s literacy skills through hands-on, active learning. The PBS KIDS Writers Contest encourages children in grades K-3 to celebrate creativity and build literacy skills by writing and illustrating their own stories.

Submissions can be fiction, non-fiction, poetry or a prose story and must include at least five colorful illustrations. Each submission will be judged by a panel of community partners and PBS SoCal education staff on the basis of creativity, originality, story structure, relevance, illustrations, and overall quality. First, second, and third place winners are selected for each grade level.

PBS SoCal will host an Awards Ceremony on May 24, 2017 at the Los Angeles Public Library to celebrate the winners of the contest and award certificates and prizes for their writing efforts. Each winner will have the opportunity to read their stories to the assembled guests.

First place winners will be entered into the PBS national contest where a panel of esteemed judges will rank the top 12 entries.  National winners will be announced this summer, and the winning stories will be featured on pbskids.org/writerscontest.

Local support for the PBS KIDS Writers contest is provided by the Steinmetz Foundation.
