Man Dies by Suicide in Santa Monica After Jumping Onto 10-Freeway

Man jumps to death off 4th Street overpass Thursday afternoon

By Sam Catanzaro

A man died by suicide after jumping onto the I-10 Freeway in Santa Monica Thursday afternoon.

According to the Santa Monica Police Department (SMPD), on Thursday around 1:57 p.m. officers were dispatched to the 400 block of the I-10 Freeway regarding an individual who had just jumped from the overpass.

“The reporting party informed dispatch that they observed a male at the 4th Street overpass hugging the guardrail. The male then jumped over onto the westbound lanes, striking a vehicle as he landed,” said SMPD Lieutenant Rudy Flores.

Santa Monica Fire Department personnel arrived on scene and pronounced the man deceased.

The man’s identity has not yet been released by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner.

The incident shut down all westbound lanes of the 10-Freeway until 4:41 p.m.
