SMPD To Hold Operation To Prevent Pedestrian and Bike Collisions

The Department Identified Locations Where Pedestrian and Bike Collisions Frequently Occur

The Santa Monica Police Department will conduct a Bike & Pedestrian Safety Enforcement Operation on June 30 between 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., focusing on enforcing traffic laws related to motorist, pedestrian, and bicyclist collisions.

The department has identified locations where pedestrian and bike collisions frequently occur and the specific violations that contribute to these incidents. Traffic officers will be deployed to patrol these areas, aiming to reduce fatalities and injuries. Their focus will be on identifying violations committed by drivers, bicyclists, and pedestrians that can result in life-altering injuries. Examples of such violations include speeding, illegal turns, failure to yield to pedestrians or bicyclists, and disregarding traffic signs and signals.

For pedestrians, the SMPD advises using crosswalks when available, remaining vigilant of approaching vehicles, and avoiding walking or running into the path of a vehicle. Pedestrians are encouraged to enhance their visibility by wearing light-colored clothing, reflective materials, and carrying flashlights, particularly during low-light conditions. Extra caution is recommended when crossing streets at night or when faced with busier roads.

Drivers are reminded to adhere to the speed limit, reduce speed at intersections, and be prepared to stop for pedestrians at both marked and unmarked crosswalks. It is crucial to avoid blocking crosswalks while waiting to make right-hand turns and to never operate a vehicle while impaired.

Bicyclists are advised to obey traffic laws, use hand signals, equip their bicycles with lights for nighttime visibility, and wear helmets for safety. Bicyclists should travel in the same direction as traffic and stay clear of the “door zone” near parked cars. Utilizing designated bike lanes is encouraged, except when making left turns, passing other vehicles, or approaching areas where right turns are allowed. Bicyclists must yield the right-of-way to pedestrians within marked or unmarked crosswalks at intersections.
